EXPRESSIONISM FLOWERS
In the Expressionist project, we used a canvas and oil paint to draw flowers. To start off, first we went outside one class and took pictures of some azalea flowers to draw and later on paint. We started out painting by painting a rough outline of our flowers with a pastel yellow color. Then, we painted another layer of an orange color, but painted more in detail. We layered on and on with different colors, red, purple, pink, etc. As we layered on different colors, we used thinner brushes and painted by observing more with finer strokes. When we painted the background, we went for a "natural black", by mixing reds and greens to produce a natural brown color in contrast to the harsh color we would be using if we painted with a dark black. After painting the flower, we went back and highlighted some areas by using a white paint. After almost completing the whole painting, I used the finest brush so far and drew pollen anthers. I think that the painting had an expressionist feel to it, because the colorful hues showed through the different layers. The easiest part of the project was painting the background, however one of the hardest parts was painting the values so that the flower appeared to be more three-dimensional and even more real-life looking. If we made a mistake with the white highlighting and made a mistake, we couldn't exactly go back and fix the incorrect values.
